INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT MSC MANAGEMENT AND INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS COHORT SEPTEMBER 2014 Module code: MAN7013 Prepared by: THANH VU NGUYEN Student ID: S13181084 Prepared for: TONY BIRCH Submission date: 3 July 2015 Introduction Coca Cola Company is known as the world’s largest beverage company with its flagship product Coca Cola, which is invented by pharmacist John Stith Pemberton in Columbus, Georgia. According to the 2005 annual report, the company operated in more than 200 countries worldwide and owns more than 500 beverage brands, mainly sparkling drinks but also waters, juice drinks, energy and sports drinks, and ready-to-drink teas and coffees. The last figure in 2010 shows that the company consumed over 1.6 billion serving beverages every day with slogan: â€Å"Provide a moment of refreshment for a small amount of money- a billion times a day†, in which coca cola accounts 75 per cent of the Company s unit sales volume of soft drinks. Competing in a fierce battle with other soft drink like Pepsi, Nestlà ©, Dr Pepper not only survives but also grows rapidly with the revenue doubling for the last ten years. It is predicted that the number could even reach $50 billion by 2016 and $53 in t wo years later though it was reduced some of millions dollar from 2012. One of the factors leading to this success is the effective operation management that Coca cola has developed and ameliorated for a long time. The U.S. Entering World War II Essay Example For Students

The U.S. Entering World War II Essay A date that will live in infamy, (Snyder 33) was what President Franklin Delano Roosevelt called December 7, 1941. It was a calm Sunday morning at Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu. Then two U.S. soldiers saw an oscilloscope signal on their mobile radars. They immediately called this in to their commanding officer but he told them to ignore it because the base was expecting a squadron of friendly B-17s to be coming from the mainland. Thirty minutes later the first bomb fell and almost killed a courier boy who was trying to deliver a message to Pearl Harbor Naval Base that the Japanese Imperial Navy was going to attack them. The Japanese bombers caught the base by surprise due to the Americans tradition of not working on Sundays. As the bombs fell, so did all the chances of the United States not joining the Allies in the second world war that wasraging in Europe and the western Pacific. Up to that point the U.S. had just been supporting the Allies but they werent technically at war with the Axis powers. All throughout the first two years of the war, President Roosevelt focused on making life diff icult for the Japanese. One way he did this was by creating various policies that would deter the Axis powers from being able to maintain the needs necessary to wage war on the Allies. One of these policies was the American financial and economic embargo, which supported China in its fight against Japan. It also, somewhat, forced neutral countries to side with the U.S. because it threatened that if any country would aid one of the Axis countries then that country would no longer be given aid packages from the United States. A second policy imposed by Roosevelt was the moral embargo of July 1938. This banned neutral countries from exporting planes and equipment to countries who engaged in the bombing of civilians. This made the U.S. look like the good guys because they were protecting the innocent people who were being killed just because the lived in a different country. By imposing these policies, the U.S. was disallowing the economic growth of the Axis countries and forcingthem to support themselves, as long as they were against the Allies. These policies were a type of weapon that Roosevelt used in order to attack the enemy without formally declare war. This would be one of the primary reasons why Roosevelt would allow Pearl Harbor to occur. Before the betrayal at Pearl Harbor occurred, a poll was taken of the U.S. citizens opinion about Roosevelt taking them into the war. Ninety-four percent were against the United States getting involved. If Roosevelt would have just attacked Japan first, he would have lost a great majority of the support he was receiving from the general population of the United States. All the facts lead to the very probable possibility that Roosevelt may have helped plan the attack at Pearl Harbor or at least gave the go-ahead to whoever did plan. It is no coincidence that half of the U.S. Navys gunboats were reassigned to Pearl Harbor only a couple of months before the attack. Roosevelt sent all the expendable ships to Pearl Harbor an d all the carriers and battleships to run drills near San Diego. Roosevelt figured that, if he was going to allow American ships to be destroyed, they might as well be the ships that are out of date and inexpensive to replace, in comparison with some of the Navys other ships. The attack on Pearl Harbor enraged the American commoner so much that they changed their views completely and wanted Japan to pay for the surprise attack in Hawaii. After all, the American people only knew that negotiations were under way in Washington DC and that the U.S. was working for peace not war. They saw the attack on Pearl Harbor as an act of betrayal. Another fact, that contributes to the possibility of Roosevelt being involved in the planning of Pearl Harbor, is that the two commanding officers at the time of the attack were acquitted, in a retrial, of all accusations of their dereliction of their duties. .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b , .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b .postImageUrl , .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b , .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b:hover , .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b:visited , .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b:active { border:0!important; } .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b:active , .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ufdbcde7005b94bdb93897c48d2ce595b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Beginning of it All Essay Therefore, there must have been some reason why they didnt worry about the incoming planes. This reason is that they had orders, from a higher ranking official, to ignore the signals. This order may have come down from Roosevelt himself. An interesting event, which greatly supports my thesis, that occurred even before Japan or the U.S. had entered the war, wasPresident Roosevelt and Secretary of the State Hull instructing Admiral William D. Leahy, then the Chief of Naval Operations, to create a war plan based on the contingency of the United States having to fight a two-ocean war. In the Pacific, against Japan, and in the Atlantic, against Italy and Germany. Why would Roosevelt have a war plan drawn up if he said he wasnt going to enter the war? It seems a bit odd, unless, of course, if he was planning on entering the war already and was just trying to find the right reason. Roosevelt may have seen that, sooner or later, the U.S. would have to go to war and they might as well be in control when the first shots are fired against Americans. Roosevelts master plan was very complex and involved a great deal of people. Two of the people who would be affected the most by this plan were Adm. Husband E. Kimmel and Gen. Willi am Short. The reason they would be greatly affected was because they were the scapegoats. Adm. Kimmel, the Pearl Harbor commander, was kept in the dark by his superiors in Washington. Officials in Washington left Adm. Kimmel without any knowledge of the attack until it was too late, and then they blamed Adm. Kimmel for not being ready. The futures of Adm. Kimmel and Gen. Short were a small price to pay for the possibilities of what economic fortunes laid ahead of the U.S. All the planning and effort that went into this scheme, ended up allowing Roosevelt to enter World War II. The attack on PearlHarbor angered the general public of the United States, and if the majority of the people want something the congress will give it to them just so that they will have a job after the next election. Therefore the majority of the congressmen voted in favor of the U.S. entering the war on the side of the Allies. Roosevelt knew that if he could get one of the axis powers to attack Americans then he could get the U.S. in the war. Roosevelt and his cabinet carefully covered their tracks very carefully so as not to leave any signs that there was foulplay. Roosevelt knew beforehand that Japan was going to attack, but he didnt take any drastic peace-keeping actions to prevent the attack, because he wanted a justifiable reason to enter the second World War. Zero-Emission Vehicles Barriers To Overcome Essay Example

Zero-Emission Vehicles: Barriers To Overcome Essay Zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) are vehicles that produce very little or no carbon emissions. ZEVs include battery-operated vehicles and vehicles which run on hydrogen fuel cells. In 1990, California became one of the first states to pass legislation establishing a ZEV program at the state level (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2008). Since that time, concerns over pollution, dependency on foreign oil, and other economic issues have increase interest in ZEV technology and have led other states to adopt similar policies. A measurable and meaningful shift towards ZEV, however, has not yet developed. Several barriers have prevented the implementation and consumer acceptance of ZEV technology. Overcoming these barriers will be an important challenge for policy makers and engineers in the future. Problems with infrastructure Cars, trucks, and other vehicles in the United States use either gasoline or diesel for fuel. Consequently, the fuel delivery system for the country is set up to handle these two products. Cars that use alternative fuels, including alternative fuels that are as relatively common as propane or natural gas, have a difficult time finding refueling stations. The lack of reliable refueling stations for these alternative fuels prevents the widespread user of vehicles that use alternative fuels. Owners of propane-powered cars and trucks, for example, must plan their trips and travel itineraries around the availability of fuel. This problem is increased dramatically as more exotic fuels are added to the mix. For example, while hydrogen fuel cells may provide a clean and affordable alternative to gasoline powered cars, there are currently no commercial refueling stations for hydrogen fuel cells. If the driver of such a vehicle was to try to make a trip of any reasonable distance, he or she would eventually run out of fuel and would be forced to change plans. The lack of hydrogen stations has created a veritable Catch-22 for commercial hydrogen technology. On the one hand, fuel providers are unlikely to create a distribution system for hydrogen fuel until there is a greater demand for their products. Unfortunately, the lack of a commercial hydrogen distribution system that is capable of servicing a fleet of hydrogen-powered cars has prevented any serious development of this technology. This problem will probably require some type of public-private partnership to be resolved. The government could provide support to create a hydrogen distribution network that could provide fuel for hydrogen-powered cars. Private investors could be encouraged through tax incentives and other government subsidies to develop the distribution network until such time that there are sufficient customers to support the new industry. It is true that there is a highly-developed electrical energy grid that is already established in the United States. Some consumers believe that all they will have to do is simply plug their battery-powered cars into any convenient outlet to recharge their batteries. Unfortunately, this perception may not be completely accurate. While the grid is in place, the ability of that grid to support the energy needs of millions of battery powered cars is not guaranteed. It is very likely that the current energy grid might simply collapse under the additional burden of millions of drivers plugging in their cars to recharge over night. As the country switches to battery-powered vehicles, it will eventually become necessary to provide more electrical energy, either through wind, solar, or nuclear power. The addition of these extra sources, however, will still not be sufficient unless the distribution system can handle the additional load.   This w ill require an upgrade of the current energy grid to handle the increased power demands. Industry problems A similar Catch-22 exists for the automobile manufacturers. Car companies must invest millions of dollars into the research and development (RD) of new models of traditional vehicles. They do this because they are reasonably sure, based on their market research, that consumers will like their new product and that they will be rewarded for their research. Along with the usual amount of RD that is to be expected of any new model car, the development of a ZEV will require the additional expense of developing new technologies. It is unrealistic, for example, to expect a ZEV engine to propel a chassis and body type that was designed for an internal combustion engine. Not only will the automobile manufacture need to develop a new ZEV propulsion system, but the company will also have to develop a body and chassis that can work with that new engine. This will require retooling and reconfiguring existing plants and/or the construction of new manufacturing facilities that are dedicated to the production of ZEV products. This is a huge expense with an unsure payoff, at least in the short term. Car companies may have a difficult time justifying this expense at a time when they are already almost bankrupt. Once again, the solution seems to lie in a partnership between government and the private sector. Government can help car companies to develop the technology that is required to mass-produce commercially-viable ZEV products. At the same time, private investors can provide capital to create the manufacturing facilities to produce the cars. Economic barriers Increased demands for electricity (in the case of battery powered cars) will drive up the cost of electricity for other purposes. This price increase will affect all consumers, not just the consumers who happen to purchase ZEVs. Increases in prices for electricity could affect the profitability of businesses, household budgets, and governments that are required to pay the electric bills for the areas in their jurisdictions. The popularity of ZEVs could suffer if the public perceives that these vehicles are increasing fuel prices. That perception will become more dramatic if ZEVs are perceived as causing or contributing to blackouts or brownouts due to an insufficient power supply. Public Perception The problems of available alternative fuels and their distribution are real problems. They can, however, be solved, given enough time and resources that are devoted to finding a solution. These problems, however, are complicated by the public awareness of them and the perception that they will be difficult to overcome. The transition from a petroleum-powered car fleet to a nation-wide fleet of battery or hydrogen cars represents a major shift not only in technology but in the publics definition of a car. Such massive change does not come easily to people, especially to people who are used to convenient and relatively inexpensive transportation. People will have to rethink the concept of what a car is, what fuel is, and how these products are purchased and used by consumers. Americans like big cars. This attitude changed somewhat during the most recent round of gasoline price increases, but there are still millions of Americans who drive SUVs or other gas-guzzling vehicles. Americans, for the most part, think of smaller cars as somehow less secure, less safe, and less prestigious than large cars. This mentality represents a serious psychological barrier for the development of alternative fuels and the cars that will use them. Until Americans change their perception of cars and overcome this psychological barrier, it is unlikely that cars that use alternative fuels will have enough of a market demand to justify their production. It is true that Honda, Hyundai, and other automobile manufacturers have done very well with smaller cars. However, even these relatively smaller cars are still larger than the typical ZEV would need to be in order to be commercially viable. Automobile manufactures and the government will need to use a combined strategy of public e ducation and advertising to create a greater demand for these cars. Conclusion Ultimately, the United States and the other nations of the world have no choice but to switch to ZEVs or other vehicles that do not burn fossil fuels. The price surge of the summer of 2008 demonstrated how vulnerable the global economy is to fluctuations in oil prices and how easily those prices may be manipulated by small groups of individuals. There is also the problem of a finite supply of oil reserves in the world. While it will be some time before the world is out of oil, it is very likely that demand will exceed production capabilities at some time in the very near future. This gap between supply and demand will drive up prices and will make gasoline powered cars inoperable in some cases. There are also environmental considerations. The link between fossil fuels, pollution, and environmental change has been well established. This is not to say that ZEVs will not come with their own set of environmental problems, including the problem of disposing of used batteries and depleted hydrogen cells. These new problems, however, can be resolved as the technology is developed. Engineers and policy makers must address both the technical and the psychological barriers to market if ZEVs are to become commercially viable in the United States. These will be difficult challenges; yet they can be accomplished if the government and private industry are willing to work together. How to Refer to Former and Future States

How to Refer to Former and Future States How to Refer to Former and Future States How to Refer to Former and Future States By Mark Nichol A variety of prefixes and words that express former and future states of being are available to writers. Here’s a discussion of the possibilities. In reference to people who are no longer in a particular position or profession, the most common wording, for example, is â€Å"former stockbroker John Smith† or â€Å"ex-stockbroker John Smith.† Other, more elaborate terms, in ascending order of ornateness, include onetime, erstwhile, and quondam. One can also use once or â€Å"at one time,† but not as a simple description preceding the name, as in the examples above; one would have to write, depending on context, something like â€Å"John Smith, once a stockbroker himself† or â€Å"John Smith, who at one time was a stockbroker.† Descriptions might also use then as an adjective, as in â€Å"then stockbroker John Smith† (note that the phrase consisting of then and a descriptive word is not hyphenated), which is distinct in meaning from phrases that include former or ex-: For example, â€Å"The book was written by former stockbroker John Smith† means that Smith wrote the book after he was no longer a stockbroker, whereas â€Å"The book was written by then stockbroker John Smith† means that Smith wrote the book while he was a stockbroker but is no longer working in that profession. A more complex form is to use turned as a transitional term between a former state and a current one, as in â€Å"stockbroker turned mechanic John Smith.† (Note that hyphens are not used to connect the terms; that common error likely arises from confusion with phrases that include the term cum from the Latin word for â€Å"and† and therefore not synonymous with turned which appears in such constructions as â€Å"teacher-cum-coach John Smith.†) Unfortunately, this variety of solutions is not available for expressing future states. Future is the only simple description, as in â€Å"future stockbroker John Smith.† Otherwise, one might write, â€Å"John Smith, who will become a stockbroker† or, in retrospect, â€Å"John Smith, who went on to become a stockbroker.† (However, politicians who will take office on a specified date can be referred to as, for example, â€Å"President-elect John Smith.†) The effect on a job title of the insertion of former, ex-, or any other similar term (or any adjective, for that matter) before the title varies according to style. The Chicago Manual of Style and similar handbooks generally treat the job title as if has joined the adjective as part of an epithet, a generic description rather than a capitalized title. Therefore, someone who no longer holds a particular office would be described, for example, as â€Å"former president Bill Clinton,† as opposed to the designation â€Å"President Bill Clinton† for a sitting president. The Associated Press Stylebook, by contrast, does not make this distinction: The form most newspapers follow is â€Å"former President Bill Clinton.† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day?
